LucasArts and BioWare have officially announced that a new MMO set in the Star Wars universe is on the way.

It's titled Star Wars: The Old Republic and is in development for PC. They're telling us to expect "immersive storytelling" and "dynamic combat", somewhat predictably. More intriguing is the reference to "intelligent companion characters".

The game is set roughly 300 years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic, which is still thousands of years before Anakin Skywalker started getting up to mischief.

The war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy and you can choose to fight for either side, playing as a Jedi knight or Sith lord. There's also "a variety of other classic Star Wars roles" to choose from. Perhaps you can be that button that always starts the spaceship.

As the game unfolds you'll meet various companions who will fight at your side. They could end up betraying you, however, depending on your actions.

"Traditionally, massively multiplayer online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars - combat, exploration and character progression," observed BioWare boss Ray Muzyka. "In Star Wars: The Old Republic, we're fusing BioWare's heritage of critically-acclaimed storytelling with the amazing pedigree of Lucasfilm and LucasArts, and adding a brand-new fourth pillar to the equation - story."

And that's not all. Muzyka is promising we can expect "all the fun features and activities that fans have come to expect in a triple-A massively multiplayer online game.

Dar anyway, let THE HYPE BEGIN smile

A press conference is held in the impressive on-site cinema. A trailer is shown, along with a video of "pre-production gameplay footage". There's a question-and-answer session, followed by roundtable presentations, executive interviews, a tour of the building and a trip to the gift shop (think Javva the Hutt coffee mugs, hundred-dollar Indiana Jones hats, Yoda costumes for dogs and receipts that bear the legend, 'May the Force Be With You').

With all that stuff going on, you might think the dozens of journalists will come away with a thorough understanding of Star Wars: The Old Republic. You might be wrong. The phrase "We're not talking about that today" is wheeled out again and again, and after a couple of hours it feels like the list of things they're not talking about today is longer than the list of acceptable subjects for discussion.

Here are just a few of the things they aren't talking about today: the story delivery system, grouping, space combat, the number of classes, travelling between planets, player housing, how long the game's been in development, how many people are working on it, PC exclusivity, subscription fees, the release date. Best quote of the event: "We're not talking about anything that has to do with space today."

Restul e pe Euro Gamer

Interesant mod de a crea valva... "V-am invitat aici sa nu vorbim despre MMO-ul nostru uber force-ificat." I smell massive hype...

Singura chertie certa e faptul ca MMO-ul asta o sa fie "KOTOR 3,4,5 and beyond", cum il considera Bioware... That means no more KOTOR RPG... sad...

MuadDib So we put a prequel in your prequel so you could play a prequel while playing a prequel.
