When you first play Gears of War for Windows, an automatic update to Games for Windows -LIVE will be downloaded. But after the update is downloaded, you're put back to the main menu of the game. If you don't shut down the game, the update won't complete.
"There's two ways to get over this bump. The easiest is to simply shut down the game after the update is downloaded (you'll know it's safe because you'll be back at the main menu, and not on the 'Don't shut down your PC while the update is being downloaded' screen). As soon as you close the game, the update will install automatically and you're good to go. The second option is to manually install the latest Games for Windows - LIVE update."
Here's a step by step walkthrough of what happens if you choose the first option:
1 - Start "Gears of War" for Windows (from Start Menu)
2 - Once the game starts, press the "Home" key to open the Game for Windows -- LIVE Guide
3 - Sign-in using an existing Xbox LIVE account, or create a new Games for Windows -- LIVE account (this will redirect you to a browser window, if you choose to create an account)
4 - Once signed into LIVE, the user will be prompted to update the Games for Windows -- LIVE version on their machine. Select the "Yes, Update Now" option
5 - Wait for the opening cinematic with the Epic Logo and the Microsoft Games Studio splash screen to play
6 - Once on the main Title Screen, press "Enter" to go to the Main Menu
7 - On the Main Menu, quit out of the game
8 - Once you quit out of the game, the Games for Windows -- LIVE System Update will kick off. Wait for that install to complete.
9 - Once that is complete, start the game again. You will have to re-login to Games for Windows - LIVE again
Microsoft Game Studios is working on a title update to be released in the near future that will allow users to avoid manually exiting "Gears of War" to apply the update. The good news is that once you go through the above process, you won't have to do it again!
An additional solution is to manually download the update outside Gears of War, which you can do so

Eu asa am facut si merge perfect. bafta."
"ok, si mie imi dadea eroarea cu close this program si am rezolvat`o. Am Windows Vista Ultimate 64 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+, 2 GB Ram, XFX Geforce 8600GT. Ca sa nu mai dea eroarea intrati direct in folderul binaries din joc si rulati startup.exe, nu mai dati play din autorun sau direct pe executabilul jocului, creati cont local de xbox live ca sa nu mai fie nevoie sa il faceti pe net, eu deja facusem cont pe net cand m`am prins ca merge sa il faceti local, nu dati sign in ca va cere serial, dati new user si doar introduceti un nume de utilizator si dati login si o sa fiti logat. Jocul merge cu detaliile la maxim si cu totul activat in video options in 1280x1024. Have fun !"

Suprisingly imi merge pe Vista. Probabil din cauza contului pe care am fost nevoit, obligat fortat, sa mi-l fac pe Live din cauza lui Halo 2. Initial l-am lasat sa porneasca cum vrea el si mergea ca un rahat pe 640/480 cu totul pe low. Am dat quit. Restart. M-am intors in XP... m-am chinuit nitel pe acolo, imi crapa constant indiferent de setarile video/audio/etc alese. Am dat restart. Vista. Am oprit o gramada de procese (tot ce s-a putut opri si nu a repornit ) am pornit GOW, am pus tot pe high si merge! Merge cam ca demo-ul de UT 3 cu totul pe high. Nu stiu voua cum va merge, mie imi merge la ~20-30 FPS.
Athlon64 3800+, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 7900 GS.
